School transport

Measures the actual walking route between home and school and compares it against the statutory thresholds — the same groundwork a caseworker otherwise assembles by hand, in seconds.

What it is

The integration measures the walking route from a pupil’s registered home address to their school along the real pedestrian network — door to the furthest pupil entrance — and compares the result against the statutory distance thresholds.

The calculation follows the Norwegian Education Act (opplæringslova): more than 2 km for year 1, more than 4 km for years 2–10, and more than 6 km for upper secondary. The threshold is applied strictly — no tolerance, no rounding.

Routing runs on the county’s own pedestrian network — the same engine the county’s handbook instructs its municipalities to use. Map data comes from Kartverket, the Norwegian Mapping Authority.

Data and permissions

• Nothing is stored. No address, no coordinate and no outcome is ever written down. The server keeps no registry and no search history.
• The map images are the only stored artefact, and the filename is a key-protected hash that contains no address or coordinate. Anyone who obtains an image link cannot work backwards to who the query was about.
• Read-only against every source.

Getting started

Each deployment is pointed at one county’s pedestrian network and school registry. To set it up for your own municipality, talk to your Customer Success Manager.

Limitations

• Norwegian legislation. The distance thresholds come from opplæringslova. Swedish Education Act rules differ and are not covered by this version.
• Distance, not a decision. The tool measures distance and compares it to the threshold. It does not weigh special circumstances such as a dangerous road, a disability or a temporary injury — that assessment stays with the caseworker.
• “Nearest schools” is a ranking, not a school placement decision.
• Ten pupils per query in batch mode.
• Depends on the county’s services. If the county’s map and routing services are down, no measurement can be made — the integration then reports the value as missing, never as a guess.
